What is a Japanese rice bag?

Japanese rice bags, also known as komebukuro, are traditional drawstring bags used to store rice. These bags are typically made from cotton or silk and are often beautifully decorated with intricate designs. In Japanese culture, rice is considered a sacred staple food, and the komebukuro is a symbol of the importance and reverence placed on rice. These bags are also used as a form of gift wrapping, with the intricate designs and craftsmanship adding to the overall presentation of the gift.

This bag is a modern take on the Japanese Komebukuro. I designed it with a unique patchwork design on all four sides, made from a combination of leftover project scraps. It’s fully lined with four interior pockets to keep you organized.

The boxy firm style sits on a wide bottom & draws together with two nylon black cords.

Leftover projects scraps of denim jeans, vintage pillowcase, painter’s drop cloth, curtain valance, men’s plaid shirts & vintage rug carpet.
